Montana Fly Fishing

Montana is a great spot to start flies fishing for beginners. If you have a license, you can fish without any restrictions in the state, and you can even get your conservation license without a problem, no matter where you live. Montana fly fishing is one of few sports that you don't need a guide, or tour group to enjoy. Instead, you can pitch your tent in the woods and do the fishing yourself.

In early summer salmon flies start to hatch

The emergence of salmonflies can be difficult to predict in advance. They hatch in June and peak at the Lyons Bridge section by July. But, weather and water conditions may push back the hatch dates. Here are some dates to be on the lookout for. To get a better sense of the hatching season, read on to learn more about the various hatches.

Yellowstone Lake is a must fish

Yellowstone Lake is the ideal place to fish for brown and rainbow trout. This renowned fishery has seven species of game fish: lake trout, rainbow trout, whitefish, and grayling. Each species has its own rules, but you should return each fish to the water if it shows a red slash.

Bitterroot River is an excellent place to begin

If you are a new fly fisherman, Montana's Bitterroot River can be an ideal place to start. Its mild climate, great fishing, diverse fish population, and friendly staff make it an ideal place to learn. In August the river can be extremely low. But, in May it can be very high and have a fantastic trico hatch. The Bitterroot River upper section has a faster gradient and can produce very productive fishing in high season. You can fish this river at the edges, near dark or early morning, if you want to fish it effectively.

Gallatin Valley is the ideal spot for wade fishermen

Montana's Gallatin River runs through Yellowstone National Park. This river is ideal for wade-fishing enthusiasts. This river is small but has plenty of fish. It's home to rainbow trout (brown trout), cutthroat and grayling. Although most fish are less than 12 inches in length, you can still catch some good ones.

Bitterroot River

The trico hatch is one of the highlights of Montana fly fishing on the Bitterroot River. It is easier to cast at this time due to the river's gradient, water flow and speed. The river's upper section is ideal for fly fishing because it has a steeper gradient and flows faster. The Bitterroot River is a great place to nymph fish. Streamers, crayfish, and other streamers work well.

Jefferson River

Nymph and streamer-fishing are both popular on Jefferson River during the spring runoff. However the temperature of the river will increase, so fishing in deeper water, warmer waters, will be slower. However, hopper fishing is a good option during high snowyears, when the water stays cool during prime season. By September, the river's water temperatures tend to rise, which will make the streamer bite more effective. The best time to go fishing is when it is cold. Anglers can check the local weather and snowpack levels.

Gallatin Valley

Gallatin Valley spring can be unpredictable, so fly fishing techniques must be flexible. Fish are most active during warm, sunny days between 11am to 3pm. Nymphs, girdle bugs and little golden stones, as well as flies imitating mayflies and girdle bug flies are all highly productive. Caddis hatches in the Gallatin river begin around mid-April. Nymphs that are 18 inches or smaller than Baetis size are consistent effective. In mid-April, warm fronts often bring light drizzle, which can produce a consistent BWO hatch in the afternoon.

FAQ

Is it safe for me to eat fish that has been caught by another person?

Always ask your seller where you bought your fish. If there is no expiration date on the fish, it is probably safe to eat. But if the fish looks old or smells bad, then you shouldn't eat it.

How far should I go?

Cast your line as deep as possible. Cast a line with your straight arm so the line doesn’t twist.

What type of fishing permit do I require?

You will need a fishing permit if your plan is to fish on state waters (i.e. the lakes, rivers and beaches). Fishing licenses are required by law in every state. If you plan on fishing in federal waters (e.g., oceans or Great Lakes), you must obtain a valid fishing licence. A fishing license is not necessary. You will need a fishing license if you plan to take fish home.

Where can I purchase my fishing supplies?

All of the above items can be bought at most sporting equipment stores. However, if you are looking for something specific, you may want to check online. Many websites offer everything you need, from tackle boxes and lures to rods or reels.

How do I know if my lure works?

Watch for movement when you throw your lure in the water. If you see movement, then your lure is working properly.

Can I fish during the day?

Fishing is allowed at all times of the day. The only time you cannot fish is during times when there is a ban on fishing.

Statistics

  • You likely have a fish hooked if the bobber moves erratically for over 5 seconds. (tailoredtackle.com)
  • Orvis, Simms, and Fishpond have been making some of the best packs and vests for a long time, and it seems like 90% of the anglers around the area use these brands. (troutandsteelhead.net)
  • To substantiate this theory, Knight attempted a systematic inquiry by considering the timing of 200 'record' catches, more than 90 percent were made during a new moon (when no moon is visible). (myfwc.com)

How To

How to Fish in Freshwater

Freshwater fishing means catching fish from freshwater streams, lakes and rivers. There are many types of fish that can be caught, including bass, carp and crappie, trout as well, walleyes, perch, pike (muskie), eel and many other species. These fish can be caught using a variety of methods. You can use a variety of methods to catch fish such as trolling or casting.

The first step when trying to catch any type of fish is finding a good location where fish are likely to be found. This often means finding a spot close to your water source. Next, choose the equipment you want.

Live bait should look like food to fish, so that they will eat it. Live bait can include worms or minnows as well as crickets, frogs or bloodworms.

You can also use artificial lures, baits made out of plastic, wood, feathers, rubber, metal, foam, and other materials. Artificial lures come in many shapes and sizes. Artificial lures are designed to mimic natural prey animals such as minnows or crawfish, shiners or grubs, as well other aquatic animals. People prefer to use lures as they don't require any skill to cast them in the water. Lures are easy to set up and easy to retrieve once they hit their target.

Casting can be a good option if your preference is not to use live bait. Casting is one of the easiest ways to catch fish. It takes very little effort and requires no special skill.

A rod, reel, line and sinker, floatant, hooks and weights are all you need. A simple pole will suffice to cast. Simply hold the rod vertically over the water to cast. Slowly lower your rod so it touches the water. When it touches water, the line begins to unwind from its reel. The lure will drop into the water once the line is at its full length.

Trolling is another way to catch fish. Trolling, which uses a boat and lures to move through the water, is another method of catching fish.

Fishing can be fun and rewarding. There are many different types of fishing available and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some methods are easier to learn than others but all require patience and practice.
